The First Lady Mama Salma Kikwete has called upon the African First Ladies to come up with workable strategies and form a sustainable partnership in combating maternal and infant mortality that has proven to be one of the major challenges facing Tanzania and African continent in general.
Mama Kikwete said this when she was speaking as one of the panelists contributing to a topic on’ Maternal Health: keystone to Millennium Development goals,’ during one of the sessions of African First Ladies health summit, held in Los Angeles, California.
“This Summit could not be convened at a better time. Its my believe that this Summit will drawn down some action points that will advance the pace of working not only towards reduction of maternal mortality but also infant mortality. I am also optimistic that we will strategize on how to combat related diseases that are causing suffering in our continent, such as Malaria, Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and malnutrition,” she said.
“At WAMA, we are working with partners including the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Ministry of Education the United Nations and other international agencies in raising awareness and promotion healthy behaviors. We are also providing support to improve heath systems and advocate for more resources in building sustainable infrastructure and provide supportive environment,” she said.
