Adolescent early pregnancy is still a problem
among young girls in Lindi; this was said Mr. Saidi Magalula,
the District Commissioner of Lindi Urban and Rural during the
official opening of one – day sensitization meeting on June
21 , 2010 about Prevention of Adolescent Early Pregnancy in
Secondary Schools in Lindi organized by WAMA Foundation and
Engender health Tanzania.
He said that adolescent early pregnancy is still an issue in
primary and secondary schools and cooperation is needed from
parents, teachers, students, community and leaders to make sure
that this problem is reduced at great extent. He added that
one of the efforts is to make sure that people responsible are
holding accountable.
The objective of the meeting was to introduce the project on
Prevention of Adolescent Early Pregnancy in Secondary Schools
in Lindi to government leaders especially in health and education
sectors at district and regional level, religious leaders and
media houses. Also, to get their contribution on key steps in
implementing the project precisely making decision on schools
and districts in which the project will be executed.
The project is implemented by WAMA and funded by Engenderhealth
Tanzania and is aimed at strengthening sexual and reproductive
health knowledge and skills among young girls in secondary school
in order to enable them reduce the risk of early pregnancy and
HIV/AIDS infection.
